Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under its Public Private Partnership (PPP) facility provides benefits for both business and the public sectors. With funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Skills Development for Youth Employment in Nigeria (SKYE) programme, along with Bosch Power Tools Nigeria have engaged in a programme to empower carpenters in Nigeria.
Twenty artisans and some of whom are returnee migrants from Europe are participating in the fully practical oriented carpentry training. The training is facilitated by Bosch expert trainer from Germany. This is a pilot scheme aimed at contributing to the development of technical and vocational skills acquisition in Nigeria. The training will empower beneficiaries with modern methods of carpentry thereby improving their professional carpentry experience and their change to gain employment or self-employment creating a better life in their home country.
The training has started on the 17th June running through to 11th July 2019 at ULDA Training Centre, Lagos. During the training, participants will take advantage of several projects and excursion. The projects include constructing standard workbenches with modern robust design and manufacturing furniture pieces based on intuitive and user-friendly design. The excursions include visits to woodworking factories where the participants will be enlightened about the end-to-end processing and marketability of the final wood products.
At the end of the training program, trainees will receive woodworking tool kits with the essential power tools needed by a carpenter. This includes six professional Bosch power tools, such as a circular saw, jigsaw, routers and planners to name a few and the accessories that will enable them to apply the newly acquired skills and to start making positive impact in the society.
“The combination of woodworking tools have been selected to match the needs and requirements of professional carpentry moving from traditional hand tools to power tools which essentially reduces waste, increases production and profitability. The field trips and excursion organized is also expected to expose the participants to new ways of working,” says Mr. Frank Diermann, Country Business Director, Bosch Power Tools, Nigeria
“GIZ SKYE programme is taking the challenge of addressing unemployment of youth in Nigeria. Our collaboration with Bosch is one of the ways we seek to improve employment opportunities. The quality of training and the exposure of the trainees to new tools and working techniques will affect their carpentry skills and are expected to have a positive impact on their quality of employment. The intervention also considers returning migrants and supports them to ensure their reintegration into the society,” says Mr Hans-Ludwig Bruns, GIZ Cluster Coordinator for Sustainable Economic Development and Head of Skills Development for Youth Employment in Nigeria (SKYE) Programme.
