Frequently asked questions

This drill bit is designed for drilling into ceramic tiles up to 10 mm thick. It’s not suitable for drilling into blocks.

It depends on several parameters, e.g the drill bit’s diameter, the pressure applied, rpm, drilling direction and thickness and hardness of your tile. With 6 mm-diameter CYL-9 Soft Ceramic drill bit, you can get 50+ holes in soft ceramic tiles. With EXPERT HEX-9 Hard Ceramic drill bit, you can drill 10+ holes in hard ceramic tiles*, and 100+ holes in soft ceramic tiles.

The tile’s size and price are good indicators. Tiles which are 30x30 cm large and larger are normally hard. The Mohs scale and PEI rating is often used to indicate the material’s hardness, with PEI ranging from 1 for low wear resistance to 5 for high wear resistance. Hard ceramic tiles normally cost more than the soft ones.

Set your power tool to gear 1. If you use a corded power tool push the trigger halfway to keep the speed below 500 rpm. If you work with a power tool without gears, keep the speed below 500 rpm, using the trigger.

Always set your power tool to the rotary mode only. Never apply the impact mode not to damage your drill bit and tiles.

Apply sufficient, but not excessive pressure (15-20 kg is recommended) until you hear that material is being removed. This means the pressure is fine and you can carry on. Cooling is not required.

Wobble your power tool slightly when you drill in hard ceramic tiles.

Once you’ve drilled through the tile, switch to a concrete drill bit (to drill concrete or brick behind the tile). Change to ‘impact mode’, and gear 2 before starting to drill with the concrete drill bit.

When you need to drill 10 mm or larger diameters in hard ceramic tiles, pre-drill with smaller diameters (6, 7 or 8 mm).
